From the empty corridor of an art Gallery...

for the last couple of years we are reading a lot on the extra ordinary growth of our indian contemporary art field and how finally indian artworks are getting global attention...
lot of articles are discussing the potential huge market for indian art at the global stage...

nowadays its not that much a surprising news that some indian contemporary art work is fetching millions in international art markets or at the domestic elite class.......
not only m.f hussain, tyeb mehta, anjali ila menon kind of iconic indian artists but even some young generation artists can boast about what their works can command on international art houses....thanks to the neo liberalization policies....

but is this art boom, really made any difference on our popular perceptions towards the art field and the practice to avoid visiting galleries as something unusual?
why I'm thinking like that, is because some weeks before I went to a reputed modern art gallery here in Hyderabad on a very fine sunday evening...
weather is excellent for an outing for people,so huge gathering at shopping malls, cinema theaters, the gardens and even at temples...
but to my extream surprise this neatly maintained art gallery is empty..!!pin drop silence prevailed there, except that 'wrrooom' kinda low sound from a old fashioned large fan...
the four people presented there except me is all security personnals..!!!!they amused to see someone enjoying some surreal things....one guy sincerely recommend me the great 'space show'excibiting near bye, planetarium!
the so called art boom not made any difference in the peoples taste towards art works rather they find art as an investment that gave you more profit than gold and land...
so sad....
(photography is not allowed inside the Gallery but I used my mobile cam to show the emptiness! my sincere apologies..)

  3. Very true. It's probably also because when people talk about art they talk mostly about high priced auction artwork by the masters they could never afford to buy, and not art by younger upcoming artists they would be able to afford. So, like many things about the new India, it's more about high amounts of money spent by rich individuals than about educating and creating a culture of art for society en-masse. We need to improve art education in our schools and colleges before we see the change you'd like to see...
